Last month, I participated in a week-long celebration of American culture and history held in Paris by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). The highlight of the event was the international launch of Picturing America, the National Endowment for the Humanities’ initiative that enhances the teaching, study, and understanding of U.S. history and culture by bringing some of the America’s greatest works of art into its classrooms and libraries. The Institute is proud to sponsor this initiative. At the symposium, I offered the following remarks on the importance of cultural diplomacy and what makes it work. Read more

IMLS Honors 10 Museums and Libraries for Outstanding Community Service
Five museums and five libraries have won the 2008 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for institutions that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. The National Medals are presented to 10 institutions every year by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in coordination with the White House. Read more.
