The reference directory related web sites are Public Key Enabled and require either a DoD Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) certificate or a PKI certificate from a DoD trusted certificate authority to access.

Historically most Department of Defense (DoD) Component directories services are designed and developed to support a limited set of local users or a specific system, application, service or network. As a result, the information in the directories are not assessable to the greater DoD community and do not support interoperablity between systems, applications and services/agencies throughout DoD.  DISA has two Directory Services that are designed to support the greater DoD community - Global Directory Service (GDS) and Joint Enterprise Directory Services (JEDS).

The Global Directory Service (GDS) is an enterprise-wide directory service that supports the DOD PKI Program.  GDS is the DoD PKI distribution point for its Certificate Revocation Lists (CRLs) and individual public key email encipherment certificates. The GDS currently provides a DoD-wide search capability for information (names, e-mail addresses, and public key email encipherment certificates) regarding DoD personnel with a DoD PKI certificate on the Unclassified but Sensitive Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNet) and the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet).

The GDS is a public key enabled application, allowing anyone with a valid DoD PKI or ECA certificate and internet connectivity to access the service at https://dod411.gds.disa.mil.

The Joint Enterprise Directory Services (JEDS) is a newly started enterprise-wide directory service that provides DoD People Discovery (i.e. white pages) and DoD identity management attribute services to support DoD access control decisions.  The JEDS harvest and correlates data from multiple DoD data sources that contain pertinent information about DoD people, objects, and resources and makes it available to DoD users through a central PKI enabled site. The JEDS currently provides a DoD-wide search capability for information (names, contact information, and other job related attributes) regarding DoD personnel on both the Unclassified but Sensitive Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNet) and the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet).

The JEDS is a public key enabled application, allowing anyone with a valid DoD PKI or ECA certificate and internet connectivity to access the service at https://jeds.gds.disa.mil.
