EPA Indoor Air Quality

EPA's Indoor Air Quality Program reduces the human health risks posed by contaminants in indoor environments. The program does not issue regulations, so it works toward its goal by conducting research and promoting appropriate risk reduction actions through voluntary education and outreach programs

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • The program is well-focused and effectively targeted, and there is evidence that its voluntary education and outreach approach is effective. There are, however, areas where increased authority could improve the program's ability to achieve greater progress toward its risk reduction goals.
  • The program regularly acheives its annual performance goals for radon, schools, and asthma, and has demonstrated progress toward its long-term risk reduction objectives. An independent evaluation would help the program evaluate the link between annual accomplishments and long term improvements in human health.
  • The program's budget is not explicitly tied to accomplishment of performance goals. There is evidence that performance data is considered during the planning and budgeting process, but agency requests do not make clear the impact of funding decisions on expected performance.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Using budget requests to more clearly show how resource adjustments impact performance.
  • Focusing on efficiency improvements.
  • Making State radon grantee performance data available to the public via website or other easily accessible means.
