National Nuclear Security Administration: Pit Manufacturing and Certification Campaign

The program restores the capability and some limited capacity to manufacture pits (nuclear material trigger components within a nuclear weapon which initiate the nuclear explosion) of all types required for the nuclear weapon stockpile.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The program has a clear and unique purpose in restoring a capability to manufacture and certify pits for the nuclear weapons complex. This capability is critically needed to maintain and improve current nuclear weapons and transform the complex into a more responsive and efficient operation to better support national security and the program is on track to provide it.
  • The program is well managed and each major task is structured as a project with a well-defined end state. The program closely monitors task progress against predefined cost, scope, and schedule baselines. This has aided in the early identification and resolution of problems and provided cost efficiencies.
  • The program has demonstrated good progress in achieving its incremental milestones of designing, manufacturing, testing, and certifying pits to meet stakeholder requirements, including developing new and improved production and testing equipment. It has consistently stayed on schedule to produce the first new certified pit in 2007, in spite of resource and research result variations.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Revising program focus and performance measures to support the requirements of modernizing nuclear weapons complex.
  • Improving the coordination of activities across multiple NNSA programs aimed at nuclear weapons activities, especially research and development work.
  • Continuing to improve the responsiveness of the Nuclear Weapons Complex Infrastructure by coordinating program activity with the Complex Transformation Strategy Record of Decision.
