Poison Control Centers

The Poison Control Centers program helps to improve centers nationwide by improving patient management guidelines and improving data collection. The program promotes a comprehensive system for the delivery of high quality poison control information and guidence to those who require it.

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • The program shows progress towards its long-term goal. The Poison Control Centers program has demonstrated progress toward achieving the long-term goal of reducing emergency room visits due to poisoning, with 2.47 visits per 1000 due to poisoning between 1999 to 2000 to 2.05 visits per 1000 between 2001 to 2002.
  • It has made progress toward stabilizing Poison Control Centers. For example, it helped stabilize 6 of the 7 Poison Control Centers that were on the verge of closing at the inception of the program in 2000.
  • The program has flaws that may hinder program effectiveness and efficiency. The program funds 62 centers across the nation. Fewer, larger centers may be more cost effective and efficient, while providing the same services and results, than 62 smaller ones.
