SeniorNavigator-where community and technology come together.

Fall into Fitness

As Virginia's hot and humid summer weather gives way to cooler fall temperatures, there’s no excuse not to get outside and get active. Physical activity may not be the path to the Fountain of Youth, but it’s proven to improve heart health, lower blood pressure, reduce stress and improve mental outlooks. From taking a stroll in a nearby park, to dusting off your tennis racquet and hitting the courts, to activities as simple as fall gardening, there’s an activity certain to appeal to anyone of any age.

While those with disabilities, arthritis, or a few too many pounds to lose may feel that “fitness” is beyond them, there’s great news. Today, there are more opportunities for physical activity for individuals with disabilities than ever before. Arthritis too, is no longer the barrier it was thought to be, in fact, many types of exercise can help people with arthritis get greater function and feel less pain. And, while obese individuals – as well as anyone over age 50 -- will want to check with their physicians before any strenuous activity, there are wonderful low-impact ways, like walking, that anyone can start to help build fitness and control weight. Strengthen your heart, your mind and your mood by getting physically active this fall. You’ll not only feel better, you’ll sleep better too!

A special thank you to our Sponsors—whose commitment to community and technology allows us to reach all Virginians, with and without internet access, and offer new tools on SeniorNavigator.
