Foundation for Traffic Safety, Senior Transportation
This website, maintained by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, has information
for families and individuals about transportation. There are tips, information,
and video clips for those driving, and information on supplemental transportation
programs for those not driving.
- AARP
Driver Safety Program
The AARP Driver Safety Program is the largest classroom driver refresher course
intended for motorists age 50 and older. The program aims to help older drivers
improve their skills and to educate them in how to avoid accidents and other traffic
violations. This website contains information on the program, class locations, auto
insurance discounts, frequently asked questions, and other resources.

Medical Association, Older Driver Safety
The American Medical Association (AMA) has created this website to offer information
on older drivers for physicians, caregivers, and older drivers themselves. The site
contains details describing the risks of driving for the elderly, AMA’s efforts
to improve driver safety, physician resources, and patient and caregiver resources.
The AMA has also developed the Physician's Guide to Assessing and Counseling Older
Drivers available on the website in addition to information on the Training of Trainers
(ToT) program designed to educate healthcare professionals on the issue of older
driver safety and to train them on assessing and counseling patients on driver fitness.

Public Transportation Association, Mobility for the Aging Population
The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has published "The Benefits
of Public Transportation." The website contains this document which details the
importance of addressing transportation for the elderly and includes demographic
statistics on the subject. There are also “Signs of Progress” in descriptions of
programs supporting public transportation options for the elderly. The document
cites areas for future improvement in areas such as system design, community design,
advanced technology, and coordination of services.

Seals Transportation Solutions for Caregivers
The Easter Seals maintains this website which has information for caregivers on
senior transportation. Easter Seals compiled this information as a special project
through the support of the Administration on Aging’s National Family Caregiver Support
Program. The information is intended for caregivers of older adults who may have
cognitive and functional limitations and need extra assistance in maintaining their
mobility. Categories of information include: communication, sensitivity, preventing
agitation, dealing with agitation, transportation review, providing physical assistance,
and resources for caregivers.
- GrandDriver
Campaign
GrandDriver is an education and awareness campaign of the American Association of
Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) to educate the public about the effects of
aging on driving ability and to encourage drivers to make wise choices as they grow
older. The GrandDriver mission is to help prepare older drivers to “Get Around Safe
and Sound” in their later years. This website includes information and links regarding
signs that one’s driving could be affected by aging, what to do to remain a safe
driver and places to look for assistance.

The National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institute of Health, created
this page to educate drivers on the effects of aging on driving, on ways to improve
driving skills, on alternative transportation options, and on other available resources.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a division of the U.S.
Department of Transportation (DOT), carries out safety programs under the National
Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966 and the Highway Safety Act of 1966.
