December 28, 2007

The first case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus has been confirmed in Pakistan. Eight suspect cases of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) were previously reported by Pakistan and the World Health Organization (WHO) on December 15. Laboratory tests have now confirmed the presence of avian influenza A (H5N1) infection in one of these cases. Additional laboratory testing is underway. In addition, at the request of the government of Pakistan, a WHO team traveled to Pakistan to support national authorities in their investigations. The preliminary risk assessment by the WHO team found no evidence of sustained or community human to human transmission.
