UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Dec. 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 333,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 340,000. The 4-week moving average was 338,750, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's revised average of 340,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending Dec. 1, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 1 was 2,639,000, an increase of 38,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,601,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,613,250, an increase of 18,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,594,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted,
totaled 461,767 in the week ending Dec. 1, an increase of 137,638 from the previous
week. There were 448,898 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 421,971 in the week ending Dec. 8, a decrease of 41,920 from the previous week. There were 384,123 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending Dec. 1, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,628,518, a decrease of 105,049 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,436,936.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 24.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,990 in the week ending Dec. 1, an increase of 783 from the prior week. There were 1,766 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 680 from the preceding week.
There were 17,642 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 24, an increase of 3,434 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,596, an increase of 3,947 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 24 were in Puerto Rico (4.3 percent), Alaska (3.7), Arkansas (3.1), California (3.1), Michigan (3.1), Wisconsin (3.1), Oregon (3.0), Pennsylvania (2.8), New Jersey (2.7), and Rhode Island (2.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 1 were in California (+16,867), North Carolina (+14,218), Georgia (+12,201), New York (+11,933), and Pennsylvania (+11,280), while the largest decreases were in Wisconsin (-6,390), Iowa (-1,255), Arkansas (-1,115), Idaho (-632), and Vermont (-566).
