News Release ETA News Release: [08/21/2006] U.S. Secretary of Labor Announces $768,761 Grant to Assist Dislocated Workers in IowaWASHINGTON U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a grant of $768,761, with an initial release of $281,721, to provide employment and training related assistance to approximately 120 workers affected by the closure of Verizon Business Services MCI Call Center, located in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. "Iowa workers transitioning into new careers as a result of this closure need access to assistance as they work to upgrade their skills to remain competitive in the 21st century economy," said Secretary Chao. "This grant will help provide these individuals with training and other assistance that will help prepare them for careers in industries experiencing high growth." The grant, awarded to Iowa Workforce Development, will provide affected workers with career and occupational skills training and job placement, case management, and employment readiness services. The grant’s project operator will be the Western Iowa Technical Community College. Training classes may lead to certifications or a degree. National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
