Secretary of Labor Announces Members of Native American
Employment and Training Council
WASHINGTONSecretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao has announced
the appointment of 18 members to the Native American Employment and Training
Council. The Councils first 2003 meeting will be held Sept. 9 at 9:00
a.m. at the U.S. Labor Departments Frances Perkins Building.
This Administration is committed to matching employers looking for
workers with unemployed workers seeking jobs so that no American worker is left
behind, said Chao. The members of this council help accomplish that
goal by focusing on the first Americans, helping the Department of Labor
achieve the goal of placing unemployed Native Americans in real jobs with
promising futures.
The Workforce Investment Act requires that the council be composed of
individuals representing Indian tribes, tribal organizations, Alaska Natives
entities, Indian-controlled organizations serving Indians, and Native Hawaiian
organizations.
One of the councils major functions is to assist in developing a
funding distribution plan for the Employment and Training Administrations
$56 million Native American grant program. The council also recommends
performance measures for grantees and advises the Secretary of Labor on
operation and administration of grant programs.
All prior appointments to the council, which requires at least 17
members, have expired. The Secretary of Labor has appointed a total of 18
members for one and two-year terms.
