The Weather History for the Month of February
- 2/1/1918
- February opens on a frigid note during one of the most severe winters in history across the central and eastern United States. Muskegon tumbles to a record cold 22 degrees below zero and Lansing also sets a record with 16 below.
- 2/2/1868
- It is a chilly Groundhog Day as Lansing sets their all-time record low with a reading of 37 below zero.
- 2/3/2007
- Blizzard conditions prevail across southwest Lower Michigan as an arctic blast of frigid air moving over Lake Michigan produces thundersnow and whiteout conditions. Grand Rapids sets a record for snowfall for any February day with 11.3 inches of snow.
- 2/4/1838
- An ice jam on the Grand River causes flooding of much of Grand Rapids during early February. Several people had to be rescued from flooded neighborhoods and at the fur trading post.
- 2/4/1996
- One of the coldest arctic outbreaks of the 20th century sends the thermometer down to 17 below zero at Grand Rapids and 19 below at Muskegon, both records for the date.
- 2/5/1890
- Temperatures more like April than February prevail during one of the mildest winters on record in Lower Michigan. Lansing sets a record high of 61 degrees for the second day in a row.
- 2/5/1918
- Frigid weather holds on across Lower Michigan with the temperature falling to record lows of 16 below zero at Muskegon and 21 below at Lansing.
- 2/6/1895
- Lower Michigan is in the midst of a week long siege of arctic air. High temperatures struggle through the single numbers while morning lows fall well below zero. Lansing falls to 14 below zero on this date after lows of 24 below on the 4th and 20 below on the 5th. Grand Rapids hits 9 below after falling to 16 below on the 5th.
- 2/6/1938
- The weight of ice and water carried away the west side of the Rouge river dam at Childsdale.The Souffrow bridge near North Belmont was closed to traffic as its footing had been swept away by the river. Several houses along the east bank of the Grand River were flooded.
- 2/7/1899
- The greatest arctic outbreak in United States history begins a period of extreme cold in Michigan. Grand Rapids hits 15 below zero. During the next week, temperatures will fall to all time record lows across the state and much of the continental U.S.
- 2/8/1925
- A four-day warm spell with highs over 50 degrees across southwest Lower Michigan peaks with a record high of 60 degrees at Grand Rapids.
- 2/9/1875
- The temperature tumbles to 32 degrees below zero at Lansing and 20 below at Detroit during one of the coldest months on record in Lower Michigan. The mean temperature for the entire month at Lansing is 4.7 degrees, the coldest month ever recorded there.
- 2/9/1934
- The coldest temperature ever recorded in Michigan occurred at Vanderbilt, with a low of 51 degrees below zero.
- 2/10/1899
- Grand Rapids has its coldest day on record with a high of 6 below zero and a low of 21 below. Muskegon had set their record for all-time coldest high temperature on the 9th with a high of 5 below zero.
- 2/11/1899
- Muskegon records their all-time record low of 30 below zero. Grand Rapids falls to 21 below and Lansing 22 below.
- 2/11/1999
- A surge of warm air ahead of a cold front brings all-time record high February temperatures to much of Lower Michigan. February records include 67 degrees at Muskegon and 69 degrees at both Grand Rapids and Lansing. Battle Creek hits 72 degrees.
- 2/12/1967
- Temperatures plummet to 24 below zero at Lansing and 16 below at Grand Rapids as arctic high pressure moves across Lower Michigan.
- 2/13/1938
- Heavy rain and warm temperatures prevail for the second day. Lansing records over three inches of rain from the storm and Grand Rapids over two inches and some minor flooding is noted across Lower Michigan.
- 2/14/1899
- The record arctic cold wave begins to abate but not before Grand Rapids sets their all-time record low of 24 below zero.
- 2/15/1954
- A two-day surge of warm air into Lower Michigan peaks with record highs of 61 degrees at Grand Rapids and 60 at Lansing.
- 2/16/1981
- Lower Michigan is in the midst of a long period of thawing weather with lows above freezing and highs mostly in the 50s from the 16th to the 20th.
- 2/17/1973
- Arctic air is in force across Lower Michigan with record lows of 19 below at Grand Rapids. Muskegon falls to 14 below zero, just shy of the record low for the day of 15 below set in 1904.
- 2/17/1979
- A long spell of frigid weather during January and February results in Lake Michigan freezing over almost completely for the only time on record.
- 2/18/1926
- A snowstorm drops 5 to 9 inches of snow across southern Lower Michigan. Lansing sets a record snow total for the day of 8.5 inches.
- 2/19/1978
- Record lows of 21 below zero at Lansing and 15 below at Grand Rapids contribute to this being the coldest February on record at Grand Rapids and the coldest of the 20th century at Lansing. The temperature never gets above freezing during the entire month at Lansing.
- 2/20/1898
- A snowstorm dumps over a foot of snow on parts of Lower Michigan on the 20th to the 21st. Grand rapids has 11 inches from this storm and almost 30 inches for the month of February.
- 2/20/1951
- Ice jam flooding along the Grand River in Portland damages several buildings and forces the evacuation of some neighborhoods near the river.
- 2/21/1986
- Lake Michigan water levels are near record highs. Coastal flooding and erosion is a concern during winter storms along the shore.
- 2/22/1930
- Record warmth prevails with highs in the upper 60s across much of southern Lower Michigan. At Grand Rapids, highs are in the upper 50s or 60s every day from the 19th to the 25th.
- 2/23/2000
- Warm air surges into Lower Michigan with temperatures reaching the 60s. Grand Rapids sets a record high of 63 degrees and Muskegon hits 60 degrees.
- 2/24/1989
- Temperatures fall below zero as a late season blast of arctic air moves in. Grand Rapids falls to a record 9 below and Muskegon hits 2 below, just missing the record of 3 below set in 1924.
- 2/25/1957
- Mild and rainy weather prevails with lows in the 40s and highs in the 50s. The low of 47 degrees at Grand Rapids sets a record for the warmest low temperature for the date. Over an inch of rain falls as a cold front moves through.
- 2/26/2000
- Record warm weather continues during a week long spell of balmy weather across Lower Michigan. The temperature hits 66 degrees at Muskegon for a record high. The low temperature at Grand Rapids is 53 degrees, setting a record for the warmest low temperature for the month of February.
- 2/27/1976
- Temperatures soar to the upper 60s during a spell of spring-like weather during the last week of February. Record highs include 62 degrees at Muskegon and 67 at Lansing.
- 2/28/1998
- Record warm temperatures include the high of 53 degrees at Muskegon and 54 at Grand Rapids, helping to make this the warmest February on record at those sites.
- 2/29/1884
- It is the coldest Leap Day on record in Lower Michigan with Lansing falling to 15 below zero and Detroit to 6 below.
- 2/29/2000
- Leap Day record highs include the 63 degrees at Muskegon, 60 at Lansing and 58 at Grand Rapids.
