National Emergency Grant Will Supplement Re-employment Programs

 Quick Links

WASHINGTON— U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced that the National Emergency Grant of $1 million allotted to aid dislocated workers in Chinatown on Dec. 1, 2001, will be dispersed among three service providers: Chinese Christian Herald Crusade, Chinatown Manpower Project and the Chinese American Planning Council.

“As I promised in my December visit to Chinatown, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has worked with the New York State Department of Labor to release $1 million in DOL National Emergency Grants to help the dislocated workers of Chinatown,” Chao said. “These three service providers will help dislocated residents and workers of Chinatown find new opportunities in the aftermath of Sept. 11. I am committed to helping and supporting the Chinatown community and will remain involved and interested in the progress of its recovery.”

The $1 million National Emergency Grant was allocated to Chinatown through the New York State Department of Labor. The $1 million comes from an original $25 million National Emergency Grant given to New York to aid in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The money will be used to supplement existing employment, skills and retraining programs.

National Emergency Grants are discretionary funds under the Dislocated Worker Program. The Secretary awards grants to states to assist with major economic dislocations. In response to the terrorist attacks, Secretary Chao has allocated over $50 million in National Emergency Grant money to aid dislocated workers all across the nation.

National Emergency Grants constitute a major part of President Bush’s economic security package. The package which is pending in the Senate will provide support to dislocated workers, including assistance with continuing private health insurance coverage.
