ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Florida State Emergency Response Team (SERT) announced that the FEMA Helpline and registration phone number will be closed Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005. Also, effective Feb. 7, 2005, the Helpline will be operational from:

8 a.m. - 6 p.m. EST, Monday-Saturday, until further notice.

Floridians who have questions about the status of their disaster assistance applications or the assistance they have received can call the Helpline toll free at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired. Operators can:

Individuals who have sustained damages caused by Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne have until Feb. 28, 2005, to apply for disaster assistance from the 2004 hurricanes via the FEMA toll-free registration number, also at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585. Applicants may also register online by going to the FEMA website at http://www.fema.gov and clicking on the right-side link “Register for Disaster Assistance Online.”

The State Emergency Response Team (SERT) is a collaboration of Florida’s state agencies led by the state coordinating officer. SERT’s mission is to ensure that Florida is prepared to respond to emergencies, recover from them, and mitigate their impact. FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
