ORLANDO, Fla. -- Floridians impacted by Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne have one month left to register for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Registration will end Dec. 31.

Floridians who received damage from one or more of the four storms can call the FEMA toll-free registration number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for those who are speech- or hearing-impaired. The lines are operational seven days a week from 6 a.m. to midnight, Eastern Time. Applicants also can register online at http://www.fema.gov by clicking on the “Register for Disaster Assistance Online” icon.

“The time is winding down for Floridians to register for available federal aid,” said Craig Fugate, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. “The wait times on the phone lines have lessened, and the Internet allows fast, easy access to submit applications online. If you have no access to either of these, please visit a Disaster Recovery Center to be helped.”

To date, more than 1.15 million applicants have registered for disaster aid from the four hurricanes, and FEMA has approved more than $950 million for individual assistance.

“FEMA has been committed from the beginning to helping Floridians recover from the multiple disasters that descended on the state starting in August,” said Bill Carwile, federal coordinating officer. “We want to make sure everyone who is eligible for aid receives the assistance they need.”

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
