Dededo, Guam -- "Following a disaster it is not uncommon for rumors to circulate about deadlines and requirements for disaster assistance," according to Federal Coordinating Officer Bill Carwile. "Residents also should be suspicious of any offers to speed up the insurance or government claims process," he said.

Individuals and business owners who suffered losses or damages during Typhoon Chata'an are encouraged to register by calling FEMA's toll-free number
1-800-621-3362 or 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- and hearing- impaired. These numbers are in operation from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Guam time, Monday through Saturday. The deadline for applying for disaster assistance is September 10, 2002.

Those who have already registered but need to update their information or have questions about the status of their application, can also call the toll-free number or the local Helpline number at 633-9820, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guam time, Monday through Saturday. Disaster Recovery Centers at the Yigo Gymnasium and the Merizo Community Center are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until further notice.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster office, located on the first floor of the Micronesia Mall near the Expo Hall, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Guam Coordinating Officer Joe Javellana reminds everyone that "All FEMA, SBA and GovGuam personnel carry photo identification. Do not hesitate to ask them to show it."
