ALL SCORECARD AGENCIES DEMONSTRATE IPv6 CAPABILITY

Washington, DC — All scorecard departments and agencies met the Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB’s) Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) deadline to report successful demonstration of IPv6 capability by June 30, 2008.

“The policy’s strategic intent is to leverage the Federal government’s requirements to catalyze adoption of IPv6 and to catalyze industry’s ability to deliver IPv6-enabled products and services,” said Karen Evans, Administrator for E-Government and Information Technology. “Agencies’ demonstration of results is a step in the right direction.”

“The Demonstration Plan to Support Agency IPv6 Compliance,” issued by the Federal Chief Information Officer (CIO) Council, laid out the specific criteria used by agencies to demonstrate IPv6 capability [1]. In the near future, the National Institute for Standards and Technology will issue the “US Government IPv6 Standards Profile.” This document has undergone extensive vetting by both industry and the Federal IT community, and reflects a cogent and comprehensive articulation of the Federal technical requirements for secure and inter-operable network products into the global IPv6 marketplace.

“Through normal cycles to refresh technology and in particular, leveraging Enterprise Architecture and Capital Planning activities, departments and agencies should focus on deploying secure, end-to-end, shared IPv6-enabled network services, and then use those services to deliver IPv6-enabled mission results,” said Administrator Evans. “The process should be holistic and agencies should use their segment architectures to develop integrated plans. IPv6 capabilities, along with all the IT enabling initiatives such as Trusted Internet Connections, the implementation of the Federal Desktop Core Configuration (FDCC), and the IT Infrastructure Line of Business, should be addressed when establishing new business processes to deliver mission results.”

“Also, agency CIOs should take advantage of the new Policy Utilization Assessment (PUA) service being developed by the General Services Administration, with an initial focus on IPv6 and the FDCC. PUA provides CIOs with statistical confidence level the policy has been implemented, with actionable next steps identified in case of implementation challenges,” said Administrator Evans.
