Palo Verde College alumnus ends career where he started

In the fall of 1964 a young Iranian immigrant enrolled at Palo Verde College with a goal of becoming an engineer.
Hassan Pejuhesh, PVC Class of 1966, achieved that goal and returned to Blythe to oversee the renovation of the local California Highway Patrol and Department of Motor Vehicle buildings on south Broadway as his final job before retiring from the California Department of General Services at the end of September.
After graduating from Palo Verde College, Pejuhesh continued his education at Sacramento State College, now CSU Sacramento, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in Environmental and Civil Engineering. After graduating in 1972, he went to work for the California State Water Resources Control Board. In 1982 he moved to the Department of General Services where he became a senior civil engineer.
Pejuhesh completed 36 years of service with the state when he retired. “I thought since I started in Blythe, I should end it in Blythe,” Pejuhesh said. He is not completely retired, however. He has started his own company, H.P. Engineering and Construction, based in Sacramento.
Life presented a number of challenges for Pejuhesh, who arrived in Los Angeles from Iran in 1963. “I didn’t know anyone in the United States, and I had only $100,” he said. He found work as a busboy and then enrolled in a class to learn English. It took about a year, he said. “I walked five-and-one-half miles to work in the morning and then took a bus in the afternoon to attend class.”
In 1964 Pejuhesh was talked into moving to Blythe and attending Palo Verde College by a fellow countryman, Ali Rahbar (Class of 1965), who was already a PVC student. Pejuhesh initially found a job at a local bakery where he worked from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. cutting bread, glazing donuts and making deliveries before going to class at 8 a.m. He then went to work for the local Sambo’s restaurant where he ended up as assistant manager by the time he graduated in 1966.
Even though he worked and carried a full class schedule, Pejuhesh had time for college activities. He served as freshman class president, played on the PVC soccer team, sang in the college chorus, and was a member of the debate team.

Four PVC students win free use of laptop computers

Four Palo Verde College students became the first winners in the Palo Verde College Foundation’s Laptop Loan Program.
Selected from among approximately 116 PVC students in Blythe and Needles were Christopher Pope, Alfonso Green, Rachel Warner and Charlae Pride, all of Blythe. Each received a Compaq Presario laptop computer programmed with Windows Vista software.
The computers are on loan by the Foundation with the stipulation that each recipient must carry a minimum of 12 units of credit each semester and maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0. A student can obtain ownership of the computer if he or she completes 48 units of credit and has a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 within 24 months.
This year’s drawing was used as incentive for students to register for classes no later that the start of the fall semester on Aug. 18.
The program was proposed by Ron Baker, Foundation board member, to encourage local students to continue their education beyond high school. In his proposal to the Foundation board, Baker said, “Convenient access to a computer is becoming essential to college life… By awarding a few laptops to our community students who are motivated to obtain a post high school education, we will be strengthening the idea that we want to help our students to succeed while providing them with a tool that they will find helpful in a very significant way as they proceed with their education efforts.”
Baker was joined by Diana Rodriguez, PVC Student Services vice president and Foundation board member, in formulating the laptop loan program. They hope to provide additional laptop computers to the program next year.

Palo Verde College sponsoring ‘Transfer Day’

Palo Verde College is holding a “Transfer Day” next Thursday, Oct. 16, to inform area students about continuing their educations at four-year colleges and universities.
The public is invited to join students in meeting representatives of eight different public and private institutions from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Anthony J. Reale Classroom/Lab building at PVC’s main campus. Participants are: University of California Irvine, University of California Riverside, California State University San Bernardino, Northern Arizona University, Bellevue University, La Sierra University and Chapman University.
This is an opportunity to obtain information directly from representatives of the participating organizations on admissions, majors, housing, financial aid, application deadlines and other resources available to students.
Hortensia Rivera, PVC Transfer and Career Center Director/Counselor, said the event has several purposes. These include encouraging students to “lose their fear of transferring, research university websites, become familiar with the transfer process, and meet with counselors.”
To promote the event on campus, Rivera is asking faculty and staff members to wear t-shirts or other attire from their own colleges and universities during the week, and to “share with students interesting and best college experiences.”
