IDVAAC extends its appreciation to everyone who attended its 2007 conference, Mobilizing to End Domestic Violence in the African American Community , which was held March 19-20, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach. More than 500 concerned individuals attended the event, representing various fields and professions, including domestic violence advocates, social workers, law enforcement officers, judges, clergy and faith leaders, community activists, researchers, students, youth workers, and others.

IDVAAC is involved in several initiatives to promote its mission. Two initiatives are featured below.

Safe Return InitiativeSafe Return Initiative (SRI) - The SRI project was established by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women to address the intersection of prisoner re-entry and domestic violence. SRI focuses on keeping families safe as ex-offenders are released back into the community. Read more…

Safe Haven Visitation Center Project - Through this project, IDVAAC seeks to examine the use of supervised visitation centers among communities of color and address issues of cultural competency within these centers by providing technical assistance to Safe Havens Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange grantees. Intimate Partner Violence & African American Women

Did you know that African-American women experience intimate partner violence at rates 35% higher than their White counterparts and 2.5 times the rate of men and other races? Are you aware that approximately 29.1% of African-American females experience intimate partner violence – rape, physical assault, or stalking – in their lifetime? Have you heard that intimate partner homicide is the leading cause of death for African-American women ages 15 to 45?

Domestic violence affects all Americans, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status. However, this threat has disproportionately dire consequences for African-American women. Know the facts. Are you aware?
