Sen. Salazar Pushes DOD to Fund Hands-On Math and Science Education Program in Colorado Springs

Washington, D.C. – In a letter to Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs Thomas Hall, United States Senator Ken Salazar urged the Department of Defense (DoD) to consider funding a new DoD STARBASE program in Colorado Springs in its budget request for Fiscal Year 2010.

DoD STARBASE is a premier educational program that provides K-12 students dynamic instruction in the areas of mathematics, science, technology and engineering through a hands-on, experiential curriculum that includes simulations and experiments in aviation and space exploration. U.S. military personnel are actively involved in the program as role models for the students, and assist them in learning the importance of teamwork, goal-setting, and staying off drugs.

“Colorado is home to several world-class military installations and thousands of military families, but we are one of only a handful of states that do not have a STARBASE program,” wrote Senator Salazar. “Establishing such a program in Colorado Springs would enable local 5th graders to take advantage of the area’s incredible personnel and technical resources. Students would benefit from the program’s proven record of successfully engaging young people in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. I ask you to prioritize this project. An investment in our nation’s youth is a direct investment in our future.”
