Update on the Current Financial Crisis
We are facing one of the most significant economic challenges our country has have ever confronted. Like many North Carolinians, I am very concerned and angry about the circumstances that have brought our country’s economy to this brink. It is important that we act quickly and responsibly to avert a deepening credit crisis that could mean massive job losses as businesses cannot make payroll, substantial losses in pension and retirement savings as the value of investments plummet, and students foregoing education as access to college loans dries up. While many believe that this action is a bailout of Wall Street, the fundamental reason Congress was compelled to act was to stop an economic collapse of Main Street.

After we weather this crisis, and I am confident we can, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Congress to improve the regulatory structures that govern our financial system. As this crisis makes abundantly clear, many of our regulations to deal with financial markets are outdated. It is also important that we prosecute any corporation or individual who broke the law and contributed to this mess. We must never find ourselves in this situation again and never again place American taxpayers and their livelihoods at risk.

If you have questions on how this financial crisis began, I encourage you to read a recent report from the Congressional Research Service, which can be found by clicking here.

If you have any additional concerns about whether or not your money is safe, I encourage you to visit the FDIC’s website that addresses many questions you might have. You can visit their website by clicking on the following website:

Rising Gas Prices
The people of North Carolina are feeling the squeeze from high prices. Families, businesses, and communities are all trying to figure out how to deal with the skyrocketing cost of energy. It is time for Congress to pass some common sense reforms that will help ease the pain at the pump that is affecting everyone.

It is essential that we increase America’s domestic production of energy to bring stability to the market and reduce energy prices. That is why I support the proposal to lift the ban on the states’ ability to explore for energy resources on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). I believe the states should have the right to decide whether they want to be part of this exploration. There is potential for rich reserves of natural gas many miles off the coast of North Carolina. It is not right for the federal government to tell North Carolinians that they cannot benefit from the lower energy prices and economic returns that could result from exploring domestic sources of energy.

In addition, we must start developing and investing in new alternative sources of energy, such as the electric platform, immediately. By increasing domestic production and developing new sources of energy, we can decrease our dependency on foreign oil, stabilize the markets, and lower the price of energy for all North Carolinians.
