Photo by Andrea Booher/FEMADavid Paulison, director of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), issued the following statement regarding the death of former FEMA employee Lacy Suiter, who retired in 2001.  Mr. Suiter died on Tuesday, August 8.

“Lacy Suiter was committed to FEMA, emergency management and helping the nation to be prepared for any and all emergencies.  He retired from FEMA in 2001, but not before leaving his mark on many important agency initiatives.  And, he managed the planning and execution of the federal government’s response to scores of major disasters and emergencies.  He brought a wealth of experience to FEMA, gleaned from years as the Tennessee State emergency management director and the head of the National Emergency Management Association (NEMA).  Using this experience, he led the federal government’s planning and readiness for Y2K, reengineered the Public Assistance Program, developed the Federal Coordinating Officer program, and strengthened FEMA partnerships not only with other federal agencies, but also with state and local emergency management agencies.

I appreciate Lacy’s leadership, professionalism and dedication to FEMA and the federal government.  His work to further the goals and professionalism of emergency management over a period of over four decades was unparalleled. I speak on behalf of the FEMA family in extending our deep sympathy to Lacy’s family.  Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
