Mission statement:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is one of the world's foremost medical research centers and is the Federal focal point for health research. Its mission is to uncover new knowledge that will improve the health status of all Americans. NIH conducts research in its own laboratories; supports the research of scientists in universities and medical schools, hospitals, and other research institutions throughout the United States and the world; helps train researchers; and fosters and supports dissemination of medical research findings. NIH maintains hundreds of laboratories, a research hospital, and the National Library of Medicine, the world's largest repository of medical literature and a national center for medical communications.
