Mission statement:

The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) provides national leadership in improving the health of the U.S. Population through prevention of premature death, disease, and disability. ODPHP's major functions include: 1) Establishing and managing national health promotion and disease prevention goals and objectives as a framework for multisectoral action to improve health and reduce risks to health; 2) Convening and coordinating Operating Divisions and Agencies of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, other Federal agencies, national nonprofit voluntary and professional associations, State and local agencies and organizations to achieve measurable improvements in health and to reduce risks to health; 3) Providing a source of expertise on public health and science, especially in areas related to prevention, public health, and primary health care; 4) Serving as a one-stop-shopping source for consumer health information resources within the public and private sectors; 5) Defining significant areas of opportunity for innovative initiatives to improve the health of the public, involving multiple agencies, and 6) Providing leadership to address those opportunities.
