DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The position is assigned to the Pest Management and Biocontrol Research Unit, at the U.S. Arid Land Agricultural Research Center, Maricopa, Arizona. The mission of the Research Unit is to develop unique and improved biological, behavioral and genetic based methods to reduce losses by insects affecting cotton and other crops in arid land production areas of the U.S. The incumbent will conduct basic studies to characterize physiology and biochemistry and establish novel molecular targets in the Western tarnished plant bug, Lygus hesperus. Successful candidate will be involved in design, application, and data analysis of laboratory studies to identify genes or gene-products and establish new environmentally benign methods for control of this pest. The assignment will further involve molecular and biochemical characterization and functional genomic analysis of potential candidate genes.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in entomology, molecular biology, biochemistry or a closely related field is required. Experience with DNA/RNA manipulation and cloning, real-time PCR, microinjection/RNA interference, enzyme/protein purification, and experience in biochemical/enzyme analyses is desirable.
