Purdue's 2007 highlights captured on video

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 53rd edition of the Purdue Newsreel, a video collection of university highlights from 2007, is now available. 

The 17-minute program, produced by the Broadcast Services unit of the Office of University Relations, can be viewed on the Web or is available from the Purdue Undergraduate Library. The video also can be purchased from the Purdue Alumni Association. 

The video, "A Year of Celebrations," is sponsored by the Alumni Association and Office of the President. It is shown to Purdue alumni clubs around the world. 

The 2007 newsreel is narrated by 1989 Purdue graduate Kathy Bruni, a production assistant in Purdue Convocations. The program was produced and directed by Ray Cubberley, director of broadcast services in university relations. 

The program can be viewed on the Purdue News Service Web site at http://news.uns.purdue.edu/  or on Purdue's YouTube channel at http://youtube.com/purdue. Highlights in the 2007 video include: a celebration for the $1.7 billion Campaign for Purdue; awards for and the retirement of President Martin Jischke; the hiring of 11th president France A. Córdova; her activities during the start of her term, including visits to the regional campuses; the dedication of the Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering, with the return of 16 astronauts; the unveiling of a statue of Armstrong; the presentation of a lunar sample from Martha Chaffee; the first gathering of four Purdue presidents; the dedications of Mann Hall, Beck Center, Schwartz Tennis Center, Native American Educational and Cultural Center, and IPFW's Rhinehart Music Center; groundbreaking for Hockmeyer Hall of Structural Biology; celebrations for the Niswonger Aviation Technology Building, the Human Development Institute's Hanley Hall, the Gatewood Mechanical Engineering Wing, and Hospitality and Tourism Management's Marriott Hall; plans announcing an $82 million overhaul of Mackey Arena; men's and women's basketball highlights; football highlights, including the Motor City Bowl victory; the hiring of Danny Hope as associate head football coach to work with head coach Joe Tiller before taking over the program following the 2008 season, when Tiller will retire; and volleyball and soccer highlights.

Other events in the video include: the World Food Prize being awarded to professor Philip Nelson; biomedical engineering research by Les Geddes that helped him receive the National Medal of Technology; the Air Race Classic team from Purdue; the offering of a new motorsports degree at IUPUI; the first female winner of the Grand Prix; 50th anniversary celebrations for the Recreational Sports Center and the School of Management; a talk by the Dalai Lama; homecoming parade; homecoming pep rally with crowning of the king and queen; homecoming procession to the game, led by President Córdova; the largest ever Block P during halftime to celebrate its centennial; winter commencement; commissioning of ROTC graduates; Alumni Leaders Conference; Gala Weekend with the alumni march to John Purdue's grave; alumni senior send-off; Special Boilermaker Award; Young Alumni Awards; alumni reception at the Black Expo; singing by the Glee Club; and comments from alumni association president Jim Karl and executive director and CEO Kirk Cerny.
