This map illustrates the percentage of teachers trained out of state in 2001-2002 and divides states into the five categories "less than 10%," "10% to 20%," "more than 20% to 40%," "more than 40%," and "did not report."
Three states, Arkansas, Indiana, and Puerto Rico, reported that less than 10 percent of their teachers are trained out of state.
Fifteen states reported that 10 to 20 percent of their teachers were trained
out of state. These states were Arizona, California, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan,
Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas,
Utah, and the Virgin Islands.
An additional eighteen states reported that 20 to 40 percent of their teachers
were trained out of state. These states were Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii,
Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Hampshire,
Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The ten states that reported more than 40 percent of their teachers were trained out of state were Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, Washington, and Wyoming. The eight states that did not report are the District of Columbia, Florida, Guam, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New York, and Tennessee.
The notes for this figure explain that the states that did not report were not able to collect the data. Also, the map reflects persons receiving initial state certification only. For purposes of this figure, the term "state" refers to the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories.
