Number of homicides by family members by relationship, 1976-2005

Two charts: one for while victims and one for black victims

For black victims -
For homicides of spouses/ex-spouses, the number began at 1,106 in 1976 and decreased to 177 in 2004. After 2004, the number increased, reaching 187 in 2005.
For homicides of parents by their children, the number began at 126 in 1976 and fluctuates with a low of 93 as it increases to 135 in 1981. The number then decreased to 48 in 2001. After 2001, it fluctuates with a high of 69 before returning to 48 in 2005.
For homcides of siblings, the number began at 129 in 1976 and fluctuates with a low of 114 as it increases to 155 in 1980. After 1980, the number decreased, reaching 42 in 2001. It then fluctuates with a high of 54 as it increases to 45 in 2005.
For homicides of children by their parents, the number began at 202 in 1976 and fluctuates with a high of 249 as it decreases to 177 in 1979. After 1979, the number rose, reaching 253 in 1982, before falling to 155 in 2005.
For homicides of nonintimate family members, the number began at 259 in 1976 and fluctuates with a low of 218 as it increases to 263 in 1981. Then the number decreased to 112 in 2002. It then fluctuates with a high of 144 as it increases to 135 in 2005.
For white victims -
For homicides of spouses/ex-spouses, the number began at 1,100 in 1976 and fluctuates with a low of 1,067 as it increases to 1,193 in 1981. After 1981, the number decreased to 547 in 2003. After 2003, it fluctuates with a high of 612 as it increases to 593 in 2005.
For homicides of parents by their children, the number began at 247 in 1976 and increased to 273 in 1981. Then the number decreased, reaching a low of 185 in 2002, before increasing to 211 in 2005.
For homcides of siblings, the number began at 128 in 1976 and fluctuates with a low of 98 as it increases to 177 in 1981. The number then decreased to 65 in 2001, before increasing, reaching 84 in 2005.
For homicides of children by their parents, the number began at 335 in 1976 and fluctuates with a low of 318 as it increases to 385 in 1989. The number then fell, reaching a low of 291 in 2000. After 2000, it fluctuates with a high of 369 as it increases to 299 in 2005.
For homicides of nonintimate family members, the number began at 282 in 1976 and climbed to a high of 345 in 1982. Then the number decreased to 186 in 2004, before increasing to 210 in 2005.
