KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- More than $5.22 million has been approved in disaster recovery aid in Missouri for homeowners, renters, business owners and local governments suffering damage from the severe storms and flooding in Missouri May 5-18. The following summary from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency is as of 7 a.m., Friday, Aug. 17, 2007:
- 913 residents have registered for FEMA assistance. The period for registration has ended; check registration status by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY: 1-800-462-7585, or online at www.fema.gov.
- 547 registrations have been approved for assistance.
- 723 damage inspections of 725 requested have been completed; the majority within two days of request.
- More than $2.2 million has been disbursed to the victims from FEMA's Individuals and Households Program.
- More than $1.23 million in disaster loans has been approved for individuals and businesses by the SBA.
- $1.77 million has been obligated to the State of Missouri under FEMA's Public Assistance program, which provides 75 percent reimbursement grants to supplement state and local government resources applied to disaster recovery.
- 287 people impacted by the disaster visited FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) set up at various times and locations during the registration period to help registrants.
- 2,965 homes, 406 businesses, 1,139 churches, 58 post offices, 38 community based organizations and 245 county/city emergency managers received personal contact and disaster information from FEMA Community Relations personnel, who distributed 12,000 flyers on disaster topics and the National Flood Insurance Program.
- $4,311 has been disbursed in Disaster Unemployment Assistance to those individuals affected by the disaster not qualifying for regular unemployment insurance from the state, such as the self-employed and farmers.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
