Waldorf, MD -- Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) benefits are now available to certain individuals in Calvert, Charles and Dorchester Counties who would otherwise be ineligible for unemployment insurance benefits.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) those who may qualify must live or work in these counties. They include: Individuals who are unemployed as a direct result of the April 28 tornado and are self-employed; Those who work in jobs or for employers not covered under the Maryland Unemployment Insurance Law such as farmers, farm workers and migrant farm workers.

In general, if individuals are eligible for any state unemployment benefits, then state benefits will be paid.

The disaster assistance period for Disaster Unemployment Assistance began Tuesday, May 7 and lasts for 26 weeks. Officials say the first payable week will be that ending May 11. Claims must be filed by June 6.
