HARRISBURG, Pa. -- State and federal disaster recovery officials warn that nine Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) open throughout the state will close on Oct. 15.

“The DRCs will be closing in a few days. If you need to get there, you have until Oct. 15. Remember it is not necessary to go to a DRC, but it is necessary to call the FEMA teleregistration number,” said David M. Sanko, state coordinating officer.

Before visiting a DRC, applicants should first register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). People with hearing or speech impairments may call TTY 1-800-462-7585. Flood victims, who sustained damage, may visit any DRC in the state. Below is a list of locations.

The Disaster Recovery Centers are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. The following centers will close on October 15:

Allegheny County — Community College of Allegheny, Allegheny Campus, Physical Education Building, 845 Ridge Ave, Pittsburgh
Armstrong County — Alltel Building, 201 North Jefferson St., Kittanning
Beaver County — Northern Lights Shopping Center, on Route 65, Economy Borough
Blair County — Sheetz Distribution Center, Sheetz Way, (off Quarry Road) Claysburg
Dauphin County — TecPort Business Center (back of Cross Gates Bldg., by Harrisburg East Mall), 470 Friendship Road, Harrisburg
Lycoming County — Faxon Lumber Company, 1700 East Third St., Williamsport
Luzerne County — Valley Crest Nursing Home, 1551 East End Road, Wilkes-Barre
Northampton County — Forks Township Community Center, 500 Zucksville Road, Easton
Washington County — Washington Mall (Old Nat’l Record Mart Bldg.) 301 Oakspring Road, Washington

“A visit to a Disaster Recovery Center provides direct access to local, state and federal specialists,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Tom Davies.

Individuals may talk with representatives about disaster housing assistance, flood insurance and homeowner’s insurance, health and welfare assistance, well water testing, crisis counseling, and senior citizen services. Representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) will also be available to help applicants complete low-interest disaster loan packets.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
