CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginians who had damages as a result of the May storms and who live in the disaster-designated counties, are assured by federal and state officials that funds are available to help them get back to normal. Residents sometimes feel that if they apply, the dollar amounts available for neighbors may be reduced. This is not the case.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in partnership with the West Virginia Office of Emergency Services and a number of voluntary organizations provide a wide range of programs and services for disaster affected residents. Help is available.

“The amount distributed to one individual will in no way affect what assistance is available to a neighbor or other citizens,” said Steve Kappa, state coordinating officer. “We will help all those who are eligible to begin the recovery process.”

FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs and will not normally compensate for the entire loss. If there is insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered under the policy. Some disaster aid will not have to be paid back, while other assistance may be offered in the form of a loan. FEMA representatives explain the details when an applicant calls.

“We always urge individuals not to have any reservations about applying,” said Lou Botta, federal coordinating officer. “The federal government has allocated sufficient funds for all those in the designated counties with eligible losses. Don’t hesitate to apply for the assistance you may need.”

The application process is easy and efficient, beginning with a call to FEMA’s toll free number, 1-800-621-3362 (FEMA) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing-impaired. However the deadline for applying is fast approaching. The deadline is August 6. Phone lines are open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
