CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and West Virginia Office of Emergency Services officials continue response and recovery efforts for those affected by the severe storms, flooding and landslides that began Memorial Day weekend.

More than $4.2 million has been approved for Housing Assistance. Housing Assistance may include lodging expense reimbursement, repair assistance and temporary rental assistance.

County breakdown of eligible applicants follows:

The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved $364,700 for home loans.

More than $470,225 has been obligated for Public Assistance. This means that local governments in the designated counties are eligible to apply for federal assistance for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repairing, restoring or replacing damaged public facilities. Disaster assistance also may be provided to certain private non-profit organizations that operate and maintain educational, utility, emergency, medical, custodial care and other essential government facilities.

Eight Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are open in Logan, Kanawha, Mingo, Wyoming, Roane and Putnam Counties. The DRC in Putnam will close Saturday, June 19, at close of business. A DRC will open next week in Braxton County. DRCs are designed to provide applicants with an opportunity to discuss their needs with personnel from state, federal and voluntary organizations who can answer questions and provide recovery information about various programs available to individuals and business owners.

West Virginia’s Office of Emergencies Services has distributed 122,000 gallons of water, 6,250 cleaning kits and 38 portable toilets.

The West Virginia National Guard has hauled 22,225 tons of debris from curbside to transfer sites in Logan, Wyoming and Mingo counties.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
