Charleston, WV -- A total of $143.1 million has been made available to date for disaster assistance as a result of property losses in 24 counties after a series of floods and mudslides in West Virginia during the spring and summer. President Bush granted Gov. Bob Wise's request for a federal disaster declaration on June 3. Disaster monies allocated include: disaster housing, $58.8 million; individual & family grants, $17.3 million; infrastructure, $31.9 million; mitigation, $9 million; disaster unemployment assistance, $192,490; demolition and debris removal, $14.5 million; mobile home site development, $9.5 million; removal and disposal of hazardous material, $900,000 and crisis counseling $1 million.
The disaster-designated counties include Boone, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Doddridge, Fayette, Greenbrier, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Marion, Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Nicholas, Preston, Putnam, Raleigh, Roane, Summers, Taylor, Wayne and Wyoming.
"West Virginia is in the process of recovering from the worst flooding in years," said Stephen S. Kappa, state coordinating officer. "Our resiliency in these tough times makes us stronger. We appreciate the people of FEMA for their hard work and dedication to help flood victims."
The large demand for temporary emergency housing and the small amount of rental housing available, has made it necessary for FEMA to implement its mobile home program. 683 travel trailers and approximately 300 mobile homes have been required to satisfy emergency housing needs.
Most administrative and field operations will close down, but some FEMA and state workers will remain to complete the temporary housing and infrastructure projects. As these projects are completed, the disaster assistance figures will increase.
