Seattle, WA -- Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge has approved a $1.8 million Hazard Mitigation Grant for the city of Port Townsend to reconstruct their main fire station which was deemed seismically unsound after damage from the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake. According to DHS's FEMA Regional Director John Pennington, the project will reconstruct the current fire station and incorporate an Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

"FEMA is proud to assist Port Townsend in enhancing public safety and improving its disaster response capabilities," said Pennington. "Bringing together critical emergency services such as fire and police response, supported by a state-of-the art communications center, will improve community services and streamline communications between first responders and emergency management."

Total project cost is $1,826,665, with FEMA providing $1,370,000, or 75 percent. The funds were made available through FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) administered by the Washington Emergency Management Division (WEMD). Local jurisdictions apply for grant aid through a competitive process that demonstrates high-hazard disaster risk and provides a cost-effective mitigation project that greatly reduces or eliminates the hazard.
