Counseling for Individual Risk and Negotiation

Medical Student: Another part of this plan that I want to talk about is with your smoking. You say that you know that you need to quit.

Patient: Yeah.

Medical Student: I've explained to you that it is a risk factor. By the time I'm hoping to see you in some weeks, what do you think would be a reasonable goal as far as your smoking?

Patient: You mean… quitting?

Medical Student: Right, do you think it would be reasonable that you would cut down so much? Or, do you feel like you would quit completely? As part of this plan I'm gonna provide materials on how to quit. We can even talk about other alternatives, if you like, medication, perhaps.

Patient: No, no.

Medical Student: Right, you are not interested.

Patient: No pills.

Medical Student: Patches.

Patient: No medicine.

Medical Student: We can talk about all that.

Patient: Okay, I mean I… like I said, my family wants me to quit.

Medical Student: Right.

Patient: They all want me to quit, I know I should quit. So, I can do it.

Medical Student: Okay, so you think by the next time we come together…

Patient: Well, it depends on what the next time, or when the next time, is.

Medical Student: Three months from now.

Patient: Oh well, yeah, I think I can do that.

Medical Student: Okay
