WASHINGTON, March 9, 2007 - Hempler Foods Group, a Ferndale, Wash., firm, is voluntarily recalling approximately 5,084 pounds of summer sausage due to the presence of an undeclared allergen, hydrolyzed sodium caseinate (milk protein), the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.

Consumers who have a food allergy, or severe food sensitivity, should always read ingredient labels. In restaurants, they should ask whether an allergy-causing ingredient is in the food.

A food allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to a certain food, usually within minutes after the food has been consumed.

Symptoms may include throat swelling, breathing trouble or a rash.

Strictly avoiding the allergy-causing food is the only absolute way to avoid a reaction.

Several foods account for 90% of allergic reactions. They include peanuts, tree nuts (walnuts, pecans, etc.), fish, shellfish, eggs, milk, soy, and wheat.

Persons who have a severe, life-threatening food allergy should always carry, and know how to administer, prescription epinephrine.
The product label fails to list hydrolyzed sodium caseinate, a potential known allergen.

The following product is subject to recall:

  • 16-ounce packages of "RESER’S FINE FOODS, Premium BEEF SUMMER SAUSAGE, Natural Smoke Flavoring Added." Each label bears the establishment number "EST. 6410" inside the USDA seal of inspection. Each package also bears a "Sell by" date of  "3/13/07," "3/18/07," "4/25/07," "5/16/07," "6/16/07" or "8/27/07."

The summer sausages were produced on various dates between Sept. 14, 2006 and Feb. 28, 2007 and were distributed to retail stores in Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington.

The problem was discovered by the company. FSIS has received no reports of illness due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an allergic reaction should contact a physician.

Consumers with questions about the recall should contact company Quality Control Manager Steven Quanz at (360) 380-6685. Media with questions about the recall should contact the Premium Brand Holdings President George Paleologou at (604) 656-3133.

Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at https://webarchive.library.unt.edu/eot2008/20081026154358/http://askkaren.gov.
