WASHINGTON, Mar. 30, 2007 - The Food Safety and Inspection (FSIS) today announced a series of meetings
focused on specific topics relating to risk-based inspection (RBI) in processing plants.
To improve food safety and better protect public health, FSIS intends to better utilize the information regularly collected
at processing establishments. By taking into account the relative risk of what each processing plant produces and how each
plant is controlling risk in its operations, FSIS will more effectively focus inspection activities at those processing
plants needing it the most, while continuing daily inspection at all processing facilities.
FSIS is conducting a series of technical summits that will address various elements of RBI. FSIS seeks input from all
stakeholders in an open and transparent manner. At each summit, FSIS will present an issue paper on its current thinking
or other relevant materials concerning the respective topic and offer questions to solicit feedback. These will be posted on the
Agency's Web site prior to each summit. Each meeting will be moderated to ensure that all participants have
ample opportunity to present their views and a transcript of the meetings will be made available on the FSIS Web site,
https://webarchive.library.unt.edu/eot2008/20081026155051/http://www.fsis.usda.gov.
Meetings will be held on the following dates:
- Monday, April 2, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meeting will focus on the algorithm used to compute
risk-based inspection levels for processing establishments.
- Thursday, April 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The meeting will address the issue of attributing illness
to food.
- Wednesday, April 25, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meeting will focus on production volume as one
element used to calculate inherent risk.
- Monday, April 30, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meeting will focus on issues surrounding the
possible use of industry generated data to inform policy.
A technical meeting on the expert elicitation process is also planned. The date will be announced at a later time.
All meetings will be held in Room 244 at George Mason University, 3401 N. Fairfax Drive, Arlington, Va., 22201.
Directions to the site, the agenda, and other meeting materials will be posted on the FSIS Web site at
https://webarchive.library.unt.edu/eot2008/20081026155051/http://www.fsis.usda.gov. The meetings will also be available by conference
call. Specific information concerning connections and the telephone number will be posted on the FSIS Web site, as
will any changes in meeting dates or times.
Members of the public should pre-register for the meetings. Online registration information is located at
