Earthquake swarm rocks upper east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano

3:30p.m. - February 23, 2000

A swarm of shallow earthquakes began on Kilauea's upper east rift zone at 1342 this afternoon. The swarm is centered near Pauahi Crater. Tiltmeters just east of Pauahi and at Pu`u `O`o are both recording changes related to the swarm, as are tiltmeters at Kilauea's summit. To the time of writing at 1530, observers near Pauahi report nothing unusual except that the ground is frequently shaking. As a precautionary move, the National Park has closed the Chain of Craters Road to all visitors. We will update this release if new developments take place.
