American Indian and Alaska Native Programs

Native Elder Health Care Resource Center

The Native Elder Health Care Resource Center (NEHCRC), initially funded by the Administration on Aging for a four-year period beginning February 1, 1994, was a national resource center for older American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians, with special emphasis on culturally competent health care. Located in the School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry, NEHCRC had at the center of its efforts four cross-cutting themes:

  • Ascertaining health status and conditions
  • Improving practice standards
  • Increasing access to care, and
  • Mobilizing community resources

Diverse organizational assets were integrated to create a thematically consistent, population-specific, and multi-component program led by experienced, prominent Native faculty. Telecommunications and print media were employed to increase awareness of and access to NEHCRC activities, faculty, information resources, and fellow participants.
