Baltimore, MD -- Maryland disaster victims have received $4,310,176 in housing assistance grants to help them begin to recover from the recent hurricane and storms.

"We are pleased that we've been able to approve and disburse well over $4 million to disaster victims in less than a week's time," said William Lokey, federal coordinating officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Maryland. "We are encouraging those with damage from the recent storms who have not already registered with FEMA, to do so now. This will begin the process of application for disaster assistance."

The FEMA toll-free registration number is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362); TTY 1-800-462-7585. If you have already registered and have questions about your application or the programs available to disaster victims, you can visit a Maryland Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) or call the FEMA Helpline: 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
