New Castle, DE -- One week after the disaster declaration, checks totaling more than $77,000 have been sent to residents who applied for state and federal disaster aid following the recent storms in Delaware, according to disaster recovery officials.
Since President Bush declared New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties major disaster areas for damage from Hurricane Isabel and New Castle County a major disaster area from tropical storm Henri, 190 individuals have registered for various disaster aid programs.
If you are injured or sustained damage to your primary residence or business as a result of either the tropical storm or the hurricane, you should apply for disaster assistance by calling toll-free 1 800 621 FEMA (3362). Those with hearing or speech impairments may call TTY 1-800-462-7585.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
