Raleigh, NC -- As the federal-state disaster recovery effort continues to reach out to hurricane survivors with unmet needs, two mobile Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) will begin making rounds Thursday and Friday in the Outer Banks and Northampton County.

The mobile centers, staffed by North Carolina and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recovery specialists and U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loan officers, have telecommunication and network computer links to assist registrants and to provide updated information on applications already filed.

One mobile center will be at the Cape Hatteras Volunteer Fire Department, 57177 State Highway 12 in Hatteras. It will open at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, and then be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Monday, September 29.

The other mobile center will be at the J. W. Faison Administration Building, 9495 U.S. Highway 305 in Jackson. It will open at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 26, and then be open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Tuesday, September 30.

The DRCs will provide information on available programs, including housing assistance, individual and household grants, SBA low-interest loan applications, business loans, mitigation, and other disaster-related programs to help cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance.

Before visiting any DRC, applicants should first register for assistance by calling toll-free 800-621-FEMA (3362). Individuals with speech or hearing impairments who use special keyboard equipment (TTY) should call 800-462-7585. The lines are open from 7 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, until further notice.

Applicants are reminded to bring their FEMA registration number and social security number when visiting any disaster center. County residents who have already registered for federal-state disaster assistance are not required to visit a DRC regarding their application, but are invited to do so for disaster-related information including preventive measures to reduce future flood risk.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
