Indianapolis, IN --A Disaster Recovery Center will open in Martinsville on Wednesday, September 24, and the centers operating in Anderson and Carmel will close at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, according to officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Indiana State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

The temporary Disaster Recovery Centers are staffed with recovery specialists who can answer questions about disaster assistance or the status of an application, offer help in filling out U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest disaster loan applications, and provide information on cost effective ways to reduce future disaster damages.

The following Disaster Recovery Centers will be staffed from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until further notice at the following locations:

Recovery officials encourage citizens to first apply for disaster assistance by calling the toll-free application number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Persons who are hearing- or speech-impaired can apply by calling a special TTY number: 1-800-462-7585. Multilingual operators also are available when needed.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
