Pago Pago, American Samoa - The American Samoa Government and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Helpline hours of operation will change, effective Sept. 13, 2003, to Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Samoan speaking operators will be available should applicants want to converse in Samoan.
The Helpline is available for those individuals who suffered damages from the May 19-21 heavy flooding and landslides and who already registered for assistance. Applicants can check on the status of their application, update their FEMA registration, and get answers to their questions.
Since its inception, the Helpline has taken more than 11,500 calls. The telephone number for the Helpline will remain the same local number, 633-3036, until Oct. 17, 2003. After Oct. 17, applicants will need to call the FEMA toll-free Helpline telephone number at (800) 621-3362. Speech and hearing impaired individuals may call TTY (800) 462-7585.
Also applicants who want to appeal a recent FEMA decision after Sept. 12 are invited to mail their appeal, written in English, to the following address: FEMA Appeal's Officer, National Processing Service Center, P.O. Box 10055, Hyattsville, MD 20782-7055.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
