Disaster Unemployment Assistance for DC Workers

(Washington, DC) Gregg Irish, director of the Department of Employment Services announced today that Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) benefits are now available to individuals who became unemployed in the District of Columbia as a direct result of Hurricane Isabel.

Disaster Unemployment Assistant is a federally funded program designed to help individuals not eligible for regular unemployment compensation benefits, but who become unemployed as a direct result of a natural disaster.

Applications for DUA may be filed in person at one of the following locations:

    South Capitol - CVS/pharmacy One-Stop Career Center
    4049 South Capitol Street, SW

    Naylor One-Stop Career Center
    2626 Naylor Road, SE

    Franklin One-Stop Career Center
    1500 Franklin Street, NE

Individuals filing claims must provide proof of their earnings for calendar year 2002. For individuals who were self-employed, copies of their 2002 Form 1040 must be provided. For individuals who were not self-employed, copies of their 2002 Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ must be provided, as well as related W-2 Forms.

Individuals wishing to file a claim must first call 202-724-7000 to make an appointment. Claims must be filed by Friday October 25, 2003.
