Seattle, WA -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Association of Counties (NACo) awarded the Building Disaster Resistant Communities National Leadership Award in five categories at NACo's 13-17 July 2001 Annual Conference in Philadelphia. In March 2001, FEMA and NACo honored twenty-eight recipients from twenty-two states for their efforts in disaster prevention at NACo's legislative conference in Washington D.C., from which the five national winners were chosen:

Disaster resistant efforts undertaken in the highlighted communities include fire ordinances; storm water management; retrofitting; growth management; small business mitigation; and community education on hazards ranging from terrorism and safe rooms to flood insurance and earthquakes.
