San Juan, PR -- Disaster recovery officials remind residents affected by the May 6 - 11 floods and mudslides who have not yet registered for assistance to do so. Monday, July 16, 2001 is the last day to register for commonwealth and federal disaster assistance.

Residents in the declared municipalities of Puerto Rico who sustained damages and still have not applied for assistance are urged to call, as soon as possible, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free registration number, 1-800-462-9029 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585), available Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"The only way to register with FEMA is by calling the FEMA toll-free registration line, said Justo Hernández, federal coordinating officer for the recovery effort. "Residents who have applied for disaster assistance or received assistance from other Commonwealth or municipal agencies, such as the Department of the Family, American Red Cross or made an inquiry/claim with the municipal Civil Defense were not automatically registered with FEMA," said Hernández.

"Even after the deadline, the registered applicants may reach FEMA by calling the Helpline at 1-800 525-0321 (TTY: 1-800-660-8005). The Helpline will not be affected by the July 16, 2001 registration deadline," Hernández added.

Helpline representatives are available Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to answer any questions about the assistance process or the status of the applications.
