Charleston, WV -- West Virginians in the 22 disaster-declared counties who have applied for assistance and whose recovery needs have not yet been resolved are urged to call the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Helpline to check on the status of their applications.

That toll-free number, which applicants may call from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week, is 1-800-525-0321. Personnel knowledgeable about state and federal assistance programs are standing by to answer applicants' questions. They also may amend an application, accept requests for additional assistance or check on the status of the registrant's earlier application.

"We want to help at every step of the process to expedite assistance to folks in the 22 disaster-declared counties who suffered losses," said Carlos Mitchell, coordinating recovery assistance for FEMA. "A quick phone call may clear away any snags in the way of your recovery help."

Stephen S. Kappa, director of the State Office of Emergency Services, added, "We still have lots of people out in those counties who haven't applied for assistance. They need to call the toll-free FEMA registration number, 1-800-462-9029, to get the ball rolling."

Hours of operation for the registration number are also from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
