Houston, TX, July 7, 2001 -- FEMA, Home Depot and Lowe's are teaming up to provide information and advice on cleaning up and rebuilding stronger after the flooding cause by Tropical Storm Allison.

FEMA "mitigation" counselors - who can tell you how to make your home safer and more secure from effects of floods by repairing and rebuilding in disaster-resistant ways - will be at four Home Depots and four Lowe's stores in the greater Houston area the next two weeks, state and federal disaster officials said.

The counselors will be in each store for three days, starting Monday, July 9, at the Brinkman Home Depot and Lowe's of North Central Houston. They will be at all locations during regular business hours - 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

People in Southeast Texas whose homes were damaged by Tropical Storm Allison's floods can learn how to clean up their homes safely and rebuild smarter. The counselors also will provide information on flood insurance and explain why flood insurance is the best way to protect your property from flood losses.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) hazard mitigation teams will staff clearly marked FEMA booths at each store, providing information in English and Spanish.

"Please come by and talk with counselors whether you have registered for state and federal disaster assistance or not," said Brad Davis, FEMA hazard mitigation officer.
